Maintenance is paid by one of the parents of a minor. It can be a lump sum payment or a periodical payment of money to care for the minor children (under 18) of the family.

Why pay Maintenance?
Maintenance is necessary to cover the cost of daily living and general upkeep and educational costs or minor child/children.
Maintenance is paid usually by the parent who does not have the responsibility of the day to day care of the minor child/children.
Maintenance payments may be decided upon by the parents and in the event the parents cannot agree, payments are decided by the court in the form of a maintenance order.

Who can apply for Maintenance?
Any parent or guardian can apply for maintenance. However... They must be a resident of Trinidad and Tobago They must have care and control of the minor child/children. They must need financial assistance for the minor child/children. Guardians applying must prove that the minor child/children is in their care and custody

An application for maintenance can be made at the Family Court of Trinidad and Tobago. The applicant can make the application in the Magistrates Court. OR
If you reside in the St. George West District (from Chaguaramas to Mt. Lambert) then you can file an application in the Magisterial jurisdiction.
